Not too long ago, Joseph Biden, the candidate for Vice President of The US, said that is was patriotic to pay more taxes. I have to respectfully disagree with him; I may even argue that it is non-patriotic for him to increase our taxes.

I think that I understand where he was coming from, but still, I take issue with his statement, and I do believe that raising taxes now, can really hurt this country.

Perhaps Biden was saying that if we all dig deep and contribute more, we can bring our country out of the deficit and into better shape, economically.

I also have to wonder, how, and why Biden expects us to trust that he, or the government, in general, will do the right things with these increases tax revenues.

As I was saying in another post (Is history repeating itself), raising taxes on the people that have worked very hard, with little to no say as to where the taxes are spent and utilized, is enough to stir some real emotions”.

So, even if we all agreed to pay more taxes, how can we trust the government to utilize these increased revenues, responsibly?

Also, how can we have more say as to where these increased tax dollars are spent?

Failed policies, from both parties, have caused these deficits and many other problems; so are we, the tax payers suppose to keep throwing more money at the problem?

Any thoughts?

  1. I would like to add to my above comment by saying that I do admire Joe Biden for several others reasons.. His great sense of family, especially in times of tragedy, his service to our country and his great knowledge of foreign affairs.

Having said that, I could not disagree too much more with him about taxation. How could paying more taxes is being patriotic? Especially after the government so eloquently (eh hemm) demonstrated that they are “not” responsible, with our money.

  2. I thought it was interesting that Biden took this direction with taxes. I have been a long time supporter of lower taxes and smaller government. So let me get this straight, it is patriotic to pay taxes, if that is true, then the inverse must be true as well, not paying taxes is unpatriotic. Did he then call all poor and middle class people who pay no taxes unpatriotic?

  3. K,

After watching how the government has so recklessly utilized and abused our tax dollars and has nearly bankrupted this country, I have seen things in a much different light, over the last few years.

I agree with you fully; very little taxes and a much smaller government., "for all". This is what our founders wanted.

In WW2, households were donating pots and pans to be melted down, to help support our efforts, overseas; to me, that is patriotic.

To tell someone who has busted their a** for many years that they need to pump more tax dollars into a system that is completely irresponsible, I do not see how that is patriotic, at all.

I don't think that he said, paying, or not paying, is patriotic or non patriotic, he is saying that to give more money is patriotic.

You're point is well taken and this is why we keep hearing the word, Class Warfare. It looks like success may now be penalized, therefore, what reason does that leave us to keep trying to build a little business for ourselves, or push on further in our careers?

May be we should sit at home and wait for the government to come bail us out? Hell, I have a few thousand in debts; perhaps it will be patriotic for them to come bail me/us out. What do you think?

  4. K,

It may even be patriotic if Senators were to stop receiving pay (from our tax dollars) for being Senators, while spending 90% of their time running for president and reeling in millions of campaign dollars.

    Hmmm…just a thought

  5. K,

I am going back to your prior post, and replying to this comment "then the inverse must be true as well, not paying taxes is unpatriotic"

I know that it is definitely illegal! : )

I am for small government and less taxes, as well.

My only stipulation to the tax part is, if I can tell the government, specifically, where I want my extra tax dollars spent.
